To Valentine’s Day or not to Valentine’s Day… That is the Question

February 7, 2018

Hands up all those who didn’t realise Valentine’s Day is next week? Now this is a very divided topic for most people. For established couples, you know if you are or are not a Valentine’s Day couple, you’ve been through a few years you know the drill. You either dismiss the day as a commercial holiday and know that your partner will love you regardless of what you do or don’t do on ‘V’ day. Or you know that it is a very important day to your partner (they’re a romantic after all) and you’ve bought the chocolates and ordered all those red roses.

But spare a thought for those poor newly formed couples! The headaches, the questions! ‘Are we a Valentine’s Day couple?’ ‘Do we ignore Valentine’s Day?’ ‘I mean it’s a commercial holiday right?’ What if I don’t do anything and then it’s all over? Lets face it, no one wants to ask their partner outright: ‘What do you think about Valentine’s Day?’ We all just try and look for the signs or ask those subtle questions and try to determine the right course of action.

Now the truth is I don’t know the answer to this Valentines dilemma. But I can tell you this, no one is going to get upset with you if you want to give them a token of your affection and love. It as we all know doesn’t have to be large or expensive, which is why Chocolates and Roses are such favourites at this time of year. Now we at Rivers Jewellers sell jewellery, so of course we recommend if you are going to display your affection and love on Valentines day then you can’t go past jewellery.

Why? Because it’s something you can personalise, it’s something tangible and it is something that can be treasured for much longer than one day, a lifetime. It is perhaps the most perfect gift choice for Valentines day. Not that we are biased at all. So if you are in search of that perfect gift then we have a lovely selection for you.

Pop in or explore our site for some lovely gifts for your partner.

You Belong Together

March 31, 2017

Congratulations, you’re considering an engagement ring… your considering a new life, no longer you alone, but the two of you together! So you’ve come in to design an engagement ring. Now I can guarantee you the last thought on your mind is what wedding ring are you thinking of putting with this engagement ring? You will think this question strange however it is a very important question and one you should consider carefully before your engagement ring is made. It is helpful to consider your engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring not as individual rings but rather as a bridal set. Even if you buy them separately and years apart. A little bit of thought right at the beginning will ensure your set looks cohesive and works together just as you want it to.

For many ladies they may not choose their engagement ring, but just about all of them will be apart of choosing the wedding ring. Most will have a thought of what kind of wedding ring they will want to wear. That’s where you men may need to be sneaky and ask some questions to try and understand what wedding ring she wants to wear as well as what kind of engagement ring! Why I hear you ask? Why do you need to know what wedding ring right now, before I even know what engagement ring I want?!

Well if you were designing and building a bridge you’d have the plans drawn up to accommodate the functions that are necessary now and others you can foresee needing in the future. Designing a bridal set is much the same principle. You start with the engagement ring and it is designed to be worn everyday for possibly as much as sixty years (if we are lucky). Then it usually has a wedding ring added to that same finger and after which we might add an eternity ring…  Each ring is significant and represents different commitment levels but they are all worn together and so all need to work together.

See for some engagement ring designs you simply can’t sit a straight sided wedding band next to them, they require a fitted band to go around them. Now I’m going to level with you here, some ladies like fitted wedding rings and some (read most) do not. Others for

practical reasons need to take their engagement ring off at work, so they just want a wedding ring that looks good on their finger all alone. Other ladies have visions of really large diamonds in their wedding rings which means that their engagement ring will need to be able to accommodate having a thick wedding ring beside it.  These are just some of the reasons why it is helpful to look at your engagement, wedding and eternity ring as a bridal set. A well balanced bridal set is a thing of beauty and a pleasure to have on your finger for 60ish years!

So the moral of this story is that when you sit down to start designing your engagement ring, you’re taking the first step towards a new future… continue to look into that future and plan for the subsequent rings also, so that your engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity rings look like they belong together, just like you both!

Bespoke Jewellery vs Designer Jewellery

January 20, 2017

Bespoke Jewellery vs Designer Jewellery…

Is there a difference?

Absolutely.

So which suits you best? And what is the difference?

Let’s start with Designer Jewellery.

We all know the big brands and in jewellery the luxury brands. Apparently buying one of their jewellery items puts you in an elite class of people as other people instantly recognise that you shop at ‘that’ luxury jewellery shop.  So they will think, you must have some serious cash!  But there are the other people out there some people however wonder if it a knock off. Cynics! As if you would fake it! But that piece you are wearing with the logo on it, why did you choose it? And what does it really say about you? Does it say trend setter? Or trend devotee?

Yes there are luxury brands out there with a reputation known for quality and workmanship. If you patron these stores for that reason then you have exceptional taste. I wish there were more people like you out there.  But  if you shop there to buy a logo as a status symbol then think about this… do you actually have any input into the jewellery you are wearing?  You picked it. You bought it. But Why? Did you buy it because it represented you completely, it’s a style you adore or it was love at first sight? Or is there someone in a magazine somewhere telling you this is the latest fashion?

Is it you completely, absolutely nothing at all you would change about it?

If you answered yes, then you are a designer jewellery person and you should keep doing what you are doing. It’s working for you.

However if you answered no… and you are thinking about that. Then keep reading.

As we’ve shifted now to Bespoke Jewellery.

How does one come to become a bespoke jewellery person?

Well, I’ll tell you. First, they look at all the store windows and they can’t find can’t find something that does ‘it’ for them.  Why because they’re an individual, and generic just doesn’t cut ‘it’ for them.

What is ‘it’ anyway?

‘It’ is different for everybody. For some it’s a particular metal… rose gold for example. No matter where they look they can’t find what they like in rose gold!

For other’s it’s a design style, like vintage. And simply there’s nothing quite vintage enough out there to match great grandma’s engagement ring.

Whatever ‘it’ is, it drives them towards having a piece custom made because nothing out there is quite working for them.

Other people out there have a vision of the perfect piece and they know every intricate detail.

However it doesn’t exist out there, they’ve looked and they can’t find it. So they too are driven to the wonderful world of bespoke.

Then there are the symbolic ones, they want to give their heart, their whole heart to the one they want to spend the rest of their lives with.

Yet the more they research and look, they can’t find that piece that  represents all the love they are offering to their true love and also represents her individual style and taste.

Wanting something absolutely perfect, they too find that bespoke jewellery is the only way they can go to achieve perfection.

As all good jewellery really should be completely and utterly you. There should be nothing you look at and think if only that was different.

Jewellery is perfect for  the celebration of milestones, it’s created to commemorate and it’s given as a symbol of someone’s heart.

So tell me what can you buy off the shelf that fits all of those requirements? I’ll tell you, nothing.

When you are after something particular and significant, then the type of jewellery you need is Bespoke.
